Hurricane Dennis produced a cold water wake over the eastern Gulf of Mexico in this satellite image of
sea surface temperature departures from normal. The cold water is the result of the strong hurricane winds
(1) producing waves which mix warm surface waters with deeper, colder water; and (2) extracting heat from the warm water to fuel the hurricane.
Cold wakes like this typically limit the strength of any other hurricanes that pass over the same area, until the water has a chance to warm up again after many days.
(Also shown is the forecast track of Hurricane Emily made on July 16, 2005).
